HERITAGE BREEDS

Heritage breeds are livestock breeds that were raised by our forefathers.

The Livestock Conservancy is defining Heritage as pure breeds of livestock with deep histories in the United States.

While our Las Nutrias forefathers focused on commercial livestock raising huge flocks of sheep in the 1800s and early 1900s and later transitioning to commercial cattle, we are focusing on heritage breeds.

LIFE ON THE RANCH

Our animals are part of everyday life at Rio Nutrias.

We raise Navajo-Churro and Icelandic sheep, Dexter and Highland cattle, miniature donkeys, and poultry.

From lamb and beef to wool and eggs, our livestock connect the food and fiber we share with the land and the family caring for it.

Navajo-Churro Sheep

Navajo-Churro sheep carry a deep connection to the Southwest and its weaving traditions. We raise these heritage sheep for lamb and wool, continuing a regional story shaped by generations of shepherds.

Irish Dexter Cattle

Dexters are a small cattle breed with roots in Ireland and a history of providing both beef and milk.

Our Dexter cattle are part of our commitment to heritage livestock and ranch-raised food.

Icelandic Sheep

Icelandic sheep are known for their distinctive double-coated fleece, with a soft undercoat and longer outer fibers. At Rio Nutrias, our Icelandic flock contributes both lamb and wool to the ranch’s food and fiber traditions.

Miniature Donkeys

Miniature donkeys have a long history as small working animals and companions. Their size is only one part of their story: thoughtful breeding and lifelong care help preserve the qualities that make this breed special.

Scottish Highland Cattle

Recognized by their shaggy coats and sweeping horns, Highland cattle originated in Scotland. Their hardiness and ability to make use of rough forage are part of a long heritage of cattle raised on challenging landscapes.

Poultry

Our poultry bring life to the ranch and fresh eggs to the table.

During the growing season, our hens, ducks, and geese forage on pasture. Visit the Online Store for current egg availability, or contact us with questions about the flock.
